Before you go

  • Check the weather. Forecasts are available through the National Weather Service. You can also get real-time weather and water conditions from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant buoys.
  • Confirm the area is open to the public. Many public access boat ramps along southern Lake Michigan are open to the public. Explore the coastal areas of Illinois and Indiana at  Southern Lake Michigan Outdoors.
  • Dress for safety. Dressing in thin layers will allow you to shield yourself from wind and sun exposure, whatever the conditions.
  • Know your equipment. Be sure all equipment is working and that you know how to properly use it.
  • Be prepared. Pack plenty of sunscreen, insect repellent, drinking water, and fuel. Be sure to also have your medical insurance card, cell phone or maritime radio, and emergency contact information handy. And don’t forget life jackets, flashlights, paddles, and a first aid kit.
  • Don’t overload the boat. Know how much weight your boat can safely carry and distribute the load evenly .
  • Check marina website(s). Learn more about protecting Lake Michigan water quality at    Clean Marina Illinois and  the    Indiana Initiative.
  • Onboard sewage. A new EPA resource, “A Recreational Boater’s Guide to Vessel Sewage,” can provide guidance  on     federal laws regarding handling onboard sewage.

On the Water

  • Boat sober. Do not use drugs or drink alcohol while boating.
  • Wear the jacket. Be sure you and everyone in your party is wearing a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Maintain a safe distance. Steer clear of structures like low water dams as well as other boats.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Travel slowing in shallow waters and areas with flooded trees.
  • Monitor conditions. Weather and water conditions can change significantly in just a few minutes. Check real-time information with the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant buoys.
  • Stay seated. Small boats can easily become unstable    and the danger of capsizing increases when more people are sharing the space.
  • Be visible. Ensure your running lights are on when boating at night.
