Before you go

  • Be sure you have a valid fishing license. Illinois and Indiana anglers can learn more at   Indiana Department of Natural Resources  or Illinois   DNR .
  • Confirm the location is open to the public. Many public access fishing spots along southern Lake Michigan are open to the public. Explore the coastal areas of Illinois and Indiana at  Southern Lake Michigan Outdoors. Visit     Indiana DNR  and   Illinois DNR  for statewide fishing locations.
  • Check the weather. Forecasts are available through the National Weather Service. You can also get real-time weather and water conditions from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant buoys.
  • Dress for safety. Dressing in thin layers will allow you to shield yourself from wind and sun exposure, whatever the conditions. Closed-toe shoes with rubber soles will also protect you from stray hooks, glass shards, and other common hazards.
  • Be prepared. Pack plenty of sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water. Be sure to also have your medical insurance card, cell phone or maritime radio, and emergency contact information handy. And don’t forget life jackets, flashlights, and a first aid kit.
  • Find the fish. Go to Fish Atlas    to see where and what kinds of fish are swimming in the water.

While Fishing

  • Wear the jacket. Whether you’re on the shore or a boat, be sure you and everyone in your party is wearing a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Monitor conditions. Weather and water conditions can change significantly in just a few minutes. Check real-time information with the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant buoys.
  • Bait, cast, and remove hooks with caution. Look behind you when casting to make sure you don’t hook someone or something. Before releasing a fish,  instead of putting your hand in    its mouth, use a hook remover or cut the line as far back as you can.
  • Be mindful of others. Someone could trip on tackles left on the ground or cut themselves on hooks left behind.
  • Check fish consumption advisories. You caught your fish,   now    you want to know if it is safe to eat. Check out the latest fish consumption advisories for Illinois and Indiana.
